Callie Cow: Where is She Now? That's what Calliope Crown's old high school classmates want to know. Now it's five years later and Calliope's gone from fat to fit in a year-long transformation with a world-renowned self-help guru. When funds she's always counted on fall through, she moves to ritzy Boca Raton to work for her snobby aunt's beachside bakery and face the same temptation that put her in the body she so desperately wants to forget. Calliope may be armed with a new identity, but old self-images don't die fast, and true self-esteem isn't something you can buy online with a credit card, even though her guru would suggest otherwise with the prices of his webinar course and weekly regimen. Enter one cute and dedicated handyman and Calliope begins to see the world in a new light. Connecting with him, as well as new friends and Internet followers may just prove that life's detours can sometimes reveal our truest identities in the most unexpected of ways.

PK also had a few things to say about creativity. I'll let her take it from here:

Balancing Creative Energy

Thanks for having me here today! I’m excited to share some insight on balancing creative energy, as it’s a topic that’s near and dear to my heart. As an author and artist, creative energy is vital to who I am as a person, and as regular to me as breathing air, but that doesn’t mean it’s consistently effortless.

On the contrary, it takes a good deal of effort to balance my creative energy with life’s obligations. If you’re a creative like me, you know that we not only operate on artistic energy, we require it. But how do we keep it in check and balance it so that we can access it on-demand? We all have our brain-fog days, right? Not to mention those days when we’re just so drained from the daily grind that we can barely get dinner on the table, let alone create. As a mom of two, wife, and part-time corporate employee, I know just how this feels.

But here’s the thing—it doesn’t have to be a struggle to summon up our creative energy.

The secret to keeping it in balance, is to understand what works for us as unique individuals. I recommend keeping a journal for at least thirty days to track times when you’re feeling creative, and times when you’re not. This will help you identify what is inspiring you, as well as when you’re feeling that rush of artistic adrenaline. You have to learn to charm your muse when she’s just not as responsive as you’d like. Just as your significant other may take you out and romance you to get you warmed up with steamy seduction, so we also must do the same for our muse on a regular basis. Matter of fact, why not mark a date on your calendar right now for a Muse Date-Night?

It may sound silly at first, but it’s exactly what we need in order to stay creative. What exactly your muse wants and needs to feel charmed, is exactly what you need to figure out in order to find the right balance in your daily life. Maybe it’s a dose of literary medicine—an exquisitely written piece that speaks to your inner writer. Or maybe it’s a crafter-noonsession with no rules other than expression. Other ideas may be:
  • Visting an art museum
  • Watching a highly visual film
  • Coloring while listening to instrumental music
  • Journaling while taking a nature walk
In addition to my novels, I have a creative journal and workbook out called Giving ImaginationWings, where I explore more ideas and activities on how to get your imagination moving.  As a society we have become experts at balancing healthy eating and exercise, so our brains are already conditioned for this type of care and cultivation, which means that now we can tap into this way of thinking when it comes to charming our muse and balancing our creativity. It’s a matter of knowing what our muse needs, and when to deliver it to keep its energy elevated and nourished.
Thanks so much for having me here today. Feel free to contact me anytime with questions you may have.
